Most homeowners spend weeks choosing tiles and paint, but the materials you never see matter far more. A house built with weak cement or poor steel can develop problems within a few years.

Cement

For general house construction, OPC 43 or PPC cement works well. PPC is often preferred for plastering and long-term durability, while OPC 53 suits columns, beams and slabs that need higher early strength. Always buy from an authorised dealer and check the manufacturing date, as cement loses strength when stored for long.

Steel

Use TMT bars of grade Fe 500 or Fe 500D from reputed manufacturers. Check for the ISI mark, uniform ribs and correct diameter. Steel is the skeleton of your home, and this is the last place to save money.

Bricks and blocks

Well-burnt clay bricks are strong and traditional. AAC blocks are lighter, faster to lay and give better thermal insulation, which reduces cooling costs. Fly-ash bricks are a good, eco-friendly middle option.

Sand and aggregate

Use clean, well-graded sand free of clay and silt. Poor sand weakens both concrete and plaster.
